The Tyne Tunnel buoys are now on site! There is still some landscaping work to be done around them, but at least they are in the right place now, and arrived in one piece too (well, 3 pieces)!

The Tyne Tunnel should be re-opening in a couple of weeks, so I'm looking forward to seeing them in the same way as everyone else will.

They're finished!

I've had a good 2 weeks of painting the buoys at Northern Protective Coatings in Bill Quay. They are still there at the moment, being given a coat of anti graffiti varnish before they are taken to the Tyne Tunnel site next week.

After a lot of preparation, developing and finalising designs, I'm really happy with the way they've turned out, after being increased in size and painted on something which is such an unusual shape. The paint is great quality too, and nice and bright (Cromadex).

North Tyneside Tyne Tunnel Buoys

I have been commissioned to work on a public art project, painting 3 marine buoys, which will be installed at the northbound exit of the Tyne Tunnel. It's a very exciting project, and will be seen by thousands of drivers every day travelling from South Tyneside to North Tyneside.

The buoys are around 10 ft tall, and will be hand painted in my own design, which depicts local scenes and activities from North Tyneside.

The local papers have been interested in the project, and the South Shields Gazette even did a feature page on me :-)

Last week, on a beautiful sunny day, they were finally moved from their home at the Stephenson Railway Museum in North Tyneside, and went to AM Fabrications in Blaydon to be fixed up, cleaned up and welded in order to be installed on site.

They are now at Northern Protective Coatings in Bill Quay, Gateshead, being shot blasted with a sky blue undercoat. I'll be in their workshop next week to paint them!

a numbers and shapes wall for the younger ones, featuring their own self portraits!

a jungle mural to be accompanied by a summer house in the future.

a memorial mural for 2 girls at the school who lost their mother. It features some of her favourite things, including sunflowers and her favourite colour - purple. This was painted on wood and will be mounted on one of the school walls in the playground.

Lots of new murals at Highfield Primary School! There is one for each class (they chose their own themes and some classes did some designs for me), and they cover most of the outside walls at the school, so the playground is nice and colourful now!

A massive mural at Highfield Primary of nursery rhymes for the nursery part of the school. Very enjoyable! :-) I'll be back there soon to do loads more murals right around the outside of the school.

Something a bit different - parking spaces! These were at Sir James Knott Memorial Nursery in Tynemouth for the kids to park their little cars and scooters.

A new work (shown below) by Turner Prize nominated artist, Cornelia Parker, has been created specially for the campaign led by artists against funding cuts.

The work shows Antony Gormleys celebrated Angel of the North with one of its wings lopped off. The caption reads: Why clip the wings of an industry that is soaring? Its a false economy to cut the arts.

It has taken 50 years to create a vibrant arts culture in Britain, and we do not want the government to slash arts funding and risk destroying this long-term achievement and the social and economic benefits it brings to all.

The whole mural painting process from start to finish!

A couple of people have asked me to explain/show the whole mural painting process, so I decided to take photos of every stage of my most recent mural.

This mural is an alien scene in a soft play room at Newker Primary School, using the excellent alien designs created by some of the children at the school.

So, the first thing I did was draw up some designs based on the children's drawings and emailed them to school for consideration. The school were happy to go ahead with the mural.

Here's just some of my stash of paint, ready to put in my toolbox and make a start on the mural.

The walls before I started...

I masked off the areas using masking tape and newspaper, then using a vinyl matt paint (dulux), I painted the whole wall navy blue. 2 coats of the paint covered it nicely.

Next, I painted the rest of the background, mixing the vinyl matt paint with a lighter blue and white.

Once the background was done I quickly sketched the planets and aliens using white chalk.

I then masked off all of the characters with white acrylic paint, just so the blue background didn't show through when I painted them.

Now the best part - painting the aliens! I used Daler Rowney System 3 acrylic paint for all of the details and glow in the dark paint for the stars, and when it was all dry I used a damp sponge to get rid of the excess chalk.

Finally, I gave it a couple of coats of varnish, and it was ready to be enjoyed :-)

The whole mural took 5 days of very hard work to complete!

A Little Dodo Called Feno

This is Feno. He's a little dodo from the island of Mauritius!

The book was written by Priya Hein and illustrated & designed by me. It was a really enjoyable project to work on, and I hope it does really well in Mauritius.

I would have loved to have gone to the book launch, but unfortunately it's quite costly for a flight to Mauritius. I'd love to visit someday, though, after seeing some of the reference photos!

'A Little Dodo Called Feno' was published in English and in French, and this is Priya's wonderful website www.priyahein.com

Take a look around the art gallery!

This is probably one of the biggest, and most enjoyable murals I've done!

The corridor was going to be the art gallery, so I re-created some famous paintings (I hope there won't be any copyright issues!) on the main wall, and further down the corridor I painted some coloured pencils and squirts of paint, which is where the children's art will be displayed.

Another jungle, but at least this one was indoors! I'm very happy to be painting indoors at this time of year. It's been lovely :-)

The library has no windows so I was asked to paint a sky in it, to create a bit of light. The hippo is holding a blackboard, which I painted with blackboard paint, so messages can be written on it. The monkeys also have speech bubbles for messages. The tree in the corner is going to have hooks hanging from it so recommended books can be attached to it.

If anyone is reading this, you're probably sick of the sight of jungles by now! I just like to keep a record on here of all of the artwork I've done so it's all in one place together. I'm sure I'll paint something different eventually! In fact, there are a few illustrations I haven't uploaded yet, so I'll have to put them on sometime soon.

This is the biggest jungle I've done so far, and also my favourite :-)

I thought it would be a nice idea to take a photo of each stage of one of my murals, so here they are!

First of all, I paint the background shape with white masonry paint. It looks a lot better with 2 layers of paint on altogether, and it also covers up any old paint or flaws on the brickwork.

Then I put on the next layer. It takes a bit longer because I have to paint every leaf individually, using 2 shades of green masonry paint. I don't worry about it being too neat at this stage, though, as I will be putting outlines on the leaves later.

Then I draw on the outlines of the characters with chalk. I usually draw up some layout and character ideas on paper first before I draw them on the wall.

Next, I colour them in with more white masonry paint, so I have a blank canvas to paint on. No need to paint the tree white, though, because it doesn't really matter if you can see a little bit of green through it.

And finally, I do the best bit - the colouring in! I use acrylic paint for this, and finish it off with a coat of varnish to protect it from weathering and fading. Here's the final result, which took me 5 days altogether for the 2 walls :-)

This is mural number 2. I did it for a reception class yard at a local primary school. I've really enjoyed painting it, but I'm quite glad I'm finished because it is soooo cold now!

Great North Run

Here's a pic of me at the finish line of the Great North Run last Sunday. I don't know how I managed to smile after running 13 miles!
I ran it with my sister for the first time ever. We ran the whole thing in 2hrs 31mins, and had a great day. The atmosphere was amazing for the whole course, and I quite fancy doing it again next year.

On Sunday, my sister and I took part in the Great Women's Run in Sunderland, which is a 10km (6.2 miles) race along the coast of Seaburn in Sunderland.
We managed to run all the way, and completed it in 1hr 10mins. The time probably isn't that great, but I'm so pleased we managed to run the whole way without stopping!
Just a few months ago, we couldn't even run for 5 minutes without being completely out of breath!

We are training for the Great North Run now, which is in September, and is an even bigger challenge - 13 miles!

I've been working on a mural at a local school lately.
This is the first mural I've ever done, so I've really learned a lot from this, especially as I've been painting it alone.
The pictures show how much I've done so far, but it's not quite finished yet. Next week I will be working with a small group of children, painting more seaweed, shells, and lots of tropical fish. I'll add more pictures when it is finished.
The playground is certainly looking a lot brighter!
